The Ruger Blackhawk is a successful modern version of the traditional single action
revolver dating to the last century. It offers a wide variety of calibers and uses,
from plinking to hunting. You will find its new Vaquero version very popular at
Western Shoots and reenactments. Since the early 1960's, the Blackhawk has been built
on the Ruger XR-3Red frame. This one piece steel frame is also the basis of the Ruger
Vaquero, the Single Six (.22) and the Ruger Old Army black powder revolvers. Since all
these revolvers use the same frame, the grips are interchangeable.
Because the grip frame is a solid investment casting, the Blackhawk frame does not have
the fitting problems of the traditional Colt-style three piece single action frame. One
fitting note however: the frame pin is rolled, so the grip hole lip might need chamfering
with a knife. Press the panel on with your hands. Don't use the screw to pull the panels
together down onto the frame.) The grip screw will pull through the grip.) After the panels
are flat on the frame, snug up the screw.
