The Colt Scout dates back to 1957, when Colt began producing a .22 rimfire single action revolver. Originally brought out to compete with the Ruger Blackhawk for the cowboy enthusiasts of the 1950s, the Scout is 7/8th scale of the Colt Single Action. It is variously known as the Frontier Scout, the Scout, the Frontier Scout Buntline, and the New Frontier (the 1970s version). Scout grips have the distinctive feature of a notch at the top of the grips where the frame is met.

The original grips came in black hard rubber, walnut, and imitation stag called "Staglite."; special editions featured fancier designs. The FIE Texas and Heritage Rough Rider are the Scout's descendants; however, their grips are not interchangeable.
